How to Add Color to Your Patios in Westerville and Dublin, OH Areas

Is your patio feeling a bit “blah” but you don’t want to build a new one? Simply updating the color scheme can make all the difference in the world. Here’s how to add color to your patios in Westerville and Dublin, OH, areas.

If you want to keep your patio as is, start by embracing your patio materials. If the patio pavers (or your poured concrete slab or decking material) are in good shape and you’re not planning on expanding your patio, then work with what you have. Think of your patio materials as a jumping-off point, kind of a blank canvas.

What are the dominant tones in your patio? Are the colors warm, or cool? In general you want to stick to either cool or warm tones or the other, to keep the space feeling bright and welcoming, but not overwhelming. 

Add color in walls. 

Unlike most color strategies, this one uses natural colors (various colors of stone) to add visual interest to your patio. This approach yields results you won’t get tired of, since color trends have a way of coming and going (remember harvest gold and avocado green?) but most wall veneers, whether you choose natural stone or manufactured stone (concrete) come in natural colors.

Don’t have a wall? Add one. It’s absolutely amazing what the humble retaining or seat wall can do for an outdoor space. No matter what your patio materials are, you can create a cozier space by partially or fully enclosing the patio with a low seat wall. This way, you won’t block views but you’ll add overflow seating and have a logical place to put a few colorful planters filled with seasonal flowers, herbs, or ornamental grasses. 

As you’re building a wall, consider adding a decorative band that is a brighter color, perhaps picking up some element in the landscape or your house, or its own color altogether. You can also add color by using a ledgestone that’s a different color than the wall. And, depending on the style of wall, you can add decorative accents using other materials.

If you have a roll-around grill, consider creating a masonry base for it - making the grill look built-in. This is another opportunity to use masonry to add natural color to your patio.

If you have a pergola or are considering one, this is another way to liven up the space. A pergola is a chic and timeless way to add shade; and you can hang colorful outdoor curtains to add privacy and offer even more protection from the sun and wind; and paper lanterns if you want a festive feel. A pergola can be installed right on any existing hardscape. To tie your pergola in with your design scheme, use masonry at the base of the pergola’s vertical supports and use the same wall materials as you would on retaining or seat walls. 

Other ways to add color include painted furniture and/or colorful cushions, planters, and of course artwork. 

And if you’re considering creating a new paver patio, here’s a way to make it unique without being busy: add color in the form of borders, accents, and inlays. If you stick to just two or at the most three colors, you won’t overwhelm the senses and your space will be colorful yet elegant.
